About RCP

The Refugee Children’s Project (RCP) is a relief organisation founded in 2002. The organisation was originally formed to facilitate the integration of refugee children and refugee unaccompanied minors into the South African society, the initial area of intervention being the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.  Since 2006, the scope of RCP intervention has been expanding from an exclusive focus on refugee children and refugee unaccompanied minors to include programmes that target women and children (whether recognised refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented migrants, IDPs or returnees).

In addition to change in scope of work, the area of intervention expanded to include projects in three additional provinces (Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape) and in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). RCP has also opened representations in other African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania) although not yet fully functioning. RCP is an active member of different networks and forums on refugees and migrants’ issues and collaborate with international relief and refugee institutions such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF, Save the Children UK, the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) and the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

RCP implements strategic projects to innovatively address gaps caused by the need to integrate refugee women and children into local society within the principle of a human rights culture with a specific emphasis on access to basic resources and services.  RCP’s projects endeavour to ensure that the rights of refugee women and children, whether recognised refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented migrants, IDPs or returnees are treated in accordance with the relevant domestic, regional and international standards.

Focussing on the Human Rights approach, RCP employs an integrated service delivery approach to alleviate multiple problems faced by refugee women and children.  Read more...
